PeakED - Environmental Involvement and Education for young entrepreneur and volunteers

Desert Bloom is a partner in PeakED - Environmental Involvement and Education for young entrepreneur and volunteers

Project Duration: 01/12/2023 – 30/11/2025

About the project:

PeakED directly addresses the critical need for mountain ecosystem conservation, recognizing their fundamental role in global biodiversity and sustainable development. The project employs innovative living laboratories (LLs) to develop context-specific methodologies tailored to the unique characteristics of mountain environments. These LLs foster dynamic collaboration and experimentation, enabling the co-creation of solutions for the complex challenges faced by mountain communities. Serving as an incubator for environmental citizenship, PeakED empowers individuals to actively manage their ecosystems. This holistic strategy directly supports the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly in combating desertification, land degradation, and biodiversity loss. By leveraging the collective knowledge and cultural assets of mountain regions, PeakED aims to unlock their full potential, building resilience and fostering sustainable development for current and future generations.

The PeakED project is led by Innovation Hive, Greece (the Project Coordinator) in collaboration with the following partners:

  • Development Organisation of Local Authorities of the Prefecture of Larissa S.A., Greece

Desert Bloom for Training & Sustainable Development

The history of Desert Bloom goes back to around the end of the second millennium, when we established the "Self-Improvement Initiative" to enhance graduates’ employability skills under the University of Jordan Alumni Club. The repercussions of World Trade Centre tragedy in 2001, particularly the growing distrust between the west and the Middle East, incited us to go global establishing "Quested Peace organization" in 2002. Quested Peace contributed to building bridges of understanding and restoring trust between the West and the Middle East. In 2004, Quested Peace joined the United Religions Initiative (URI), the largest grassroots interfaith and peace-building organization worldwide.  In July 2018, Quested Peace changed its name to Desert Bloom.

An Authentic Bedouin Experience in Jordan's Desert

An Authentic Bedouin Experience in Jordan's Desert

Two volunteers from Desert Bloom, Patryk Pacana and Krzysztof Czarski, recently embarked on an immersive journey to explore the Bedouin heritage of southern Jordan. They were hosted in Udruh, a village in the Badia region, where they were given a unique glimpse into the daily life and traditions of the Bedouin community.

The trip was a chance for the volunteers to experience the Bedouins' deep connection to their desert home firsthand. The Badia, a stunning desert crossroads for ancient civilizations, provided the perfect backdrop for their visit. There, they learned how the environment has shaped the community's incredible resilience and traditional way of life. At the heart of Bedouin culture is karam, or generosity, and the volunteers were treated with immense warmth and respect.

Patryk shared his personal reflections on this experience:

"Staying with Bedouins in southern Jordan is a profound immersion into raw hospitality and ancient desert traditions. From the moment of arrival, we were welcomed with sweet tea and gahwa in woven tents, sharing stories under endless starry skies. Nights echo with music and tales of nomadic life. The experience strips away modern distractions, leaving a deep appreciation for the Bedouins’ generosity, resilience, and connection to the stark beauty of the desert. Departing feels like leaving family, with an enduring sense of timelessness and human warmth."

A significant part of their journey was a deep dive into the Bedouin relationship with their livestock, particularly camels. They learned how these animals are central to Bedouin culture and are cared for as vital resources for transportation and livelihood. They were also astonished by the Bedouins' vast knowledge of the desert, as they navigate the endless sands with a deep, inherited understanding of the land.

Beyond their time in the desert, Patryk and Krzysztof also connected with the broader community, visiting local organizations like the Crown Prince Foundation branch in Maan, the Maan Heritage Museum, and King Hussein University. These visits provided a broader context for the region's rich history and modern development.

In a proactive effort to equip young people with the skills to navigate the complexities of the digital world, Desert Bloom, a member of the URI network in the MENA region, has initiated a series of four hybrid Cultural Café sessions. This initiative, titled "Empowering Youth for a Healthier Digital Life," is designed to prepare volunteers and network members for their engagement in the "DiWeGa – Digital Wellness Guardians" project.

The DiWeGa project is a 36-month Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange initiative, co-funded by the European Union. Its mission is to empower young people aged 18–30 and youth workers to become confident, resilient, and aware digital citizens. The project directly addresses pressing challenges prevalent today, including the negative psychological effects of excessive screen time, cyberbullying, online hate, and the pressure to perform on social media.

The Cultural Café sessions, conducted both via Zoom and in-person, have been meticulously curated to explore critical aspects of digital wellness. The curriculum focuses on four key themes:

  • Health and Usage: This session delves into the effects of digital overuse on physical and mental well-being, highlighting the importance of a "digital detox" for a healthier lifestyle.
  • Information Management: Participants are guided on how to navigate the digital landscape, focusing on combating misinformation and fake news, and building essential social media literacy.
  • Digital Ethics and Safety: This discussion centers on addressing critical privacy concerns, preventing cyberbullying, and combating online harassment.
  • Intercultural Virtual Exchange Competence: The final session promotes digital literacy and cultural sensitivity, fostering a respectful and inclusive environment in online spaces.

"Our goal is to provide our youth with the necessary tools to thrive in the digital age, not just survive it," said Mamoun Khreisat, the Founder of Desert Bloom. "These sessions are a foundational step in our commitment to fostering a generation of responsible, safe, and digitally well-versed individuals. We are proud to be a part of the DiWeGa project and contribute to this vital cause."

The initiative marks a significant step for Desert Bloom and the URI network in the MENA region, reinforcing their dedication to the holistic development and empowerment of young people.

"Equality in Networking" Training Course

Desert Bloom actively participated in the "Equality in Networking" training course held in Badalona and hosted by Asociación La Rotllana. This course brought together 25 youth workers from 8 European and South Mediterranean countries. The primary focus of the training was to enhance participants' practical skills in building partnerships and designing as well as managing international projects, utilizing non-formal and informal education methods.

Promoting a culture of peer-learning, the training provided a platform for participants to exchange valuable insights and reflect on their experiences. The program incorporated experiential learning elements, including visits to like-minded organizations and the University of Barcelona, enriching the overall training experience.

Below is feedback from Desert Bloom participant:

Attending the training was a truly enriching experience, unveiling the significance of fostering mutually beneficial partnerships and co-creating international projects in multicultural settings.

Recognizing the pivotal role of team-building games cannot be overstated. These activities not only nurture collaboration, communication, and trust among team members but also serve as delightful tools to break the ice and cultivate robust relationships. Whether through a trust fall or a team scavenger hunt, these games contribute to heightened morale and increased productivity.

Exploring other organizations during the visits, particularly the University of Barcelona, was a highlight. The university stands as a prestigious institution renowned for its diverse academic programs, extensive research, and unwavering commitment to innovation. Its notable connection to sports includes engaging sports teams and programs that provide students with opportunities for participation and competition against other institutions. This involvement fosters physical fitness, teamwork, and discipline, ensuring students enjoy a well-rounded experience that balances academics with healthy competition.

The University of Barcelona's dedication to diversity and inclusivity is evident in its robust support for the immigrant community. Striving to create an inclusive environment, the university offers tailored resources and services to assist immigrant students in adapting and thriving academically. This approach underscores the institution's appreciation for the unique contributions of immigrant students to the university community.
